Before heading to college I, like every other incoming freshmen was told horror stories about the dreaded “Freshmen Fifteen”. Girls shudder at the thought, guys groan at the mention and I, like many others swore up, down, and sideways that I wouldn’t fall into the trap.
Well, I fell into it and I fell hard. I take your fifteen and raise you five. That’s right. In less than four months I gained 20 pounds. I must say though that all the online articles I’ve read have clearly stated that the only way you actually gain 15+ pounds is if you drink a lot. Now, I have never even had a sip of alcohol and at 97% of my meals I drink water. So why the weight gain? I mean I go to a college that is spread out on different levels of a hill. There are a ton of stairs and when there isn’t you’re still walking on an incline. What the hype?
Who ever decided putting 8 different types of hard ice cream and a soft-serve machine in a college dining hall is simultaneously a genius and an idiot. I am a huge ice cream fan and when lunch and dinner come to pass, and my stomach isn’t full the ice cream buffet is were I go. Cookies and Cream, Cookie Dough, Vanilla and Fudge. How do I choose? Here’s how, most days I’ll have vanilla soft-serve in a cone after lunch, maybe two if I don’t have to rush to class. After dinner, 1-2 bowls of hard ice cream. Yikes.
If that wasn’t enough, there is an endless supply of french fries. College fries aren’t the tastiest in the world but add a bit of salt and it’s yummy in your tummy. Then there are the chicken nugget lunches every few weeks. These lunches are legendary on campus! Football players shovel them into their mouths and into bags for later dining. So maybe I know why I gained the weight.
Have any of you experienced “Freshmen Fifteen”? How did you deal? I’d love to hear from you!
